What is a Cochlear Implant?

A cochlear implant is an advanced electronic hearing device designed to help people with severe to profound hearing loss who receive limited benefit from conventional hearing aids. Unlike a hearing aid, which amplifies sound, a cochlear implant bypasses damaged parts of the inner ear and directly stimulates the auditory nerve.

Who May Benefit from a Cochlear Implant?

Cochlear implants may be considered for children and adults with significant sensorineural hearing loss when hearing aids do not provide sufficient benefit.

They may be recommended for:

  • Severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss
  • Hearing loss in both ears
  • Children with significant hearing loss affecting speech and language development
  • Adults who have difficulty understanding speech despite appropriately fitted hearing aids
  • Certain cases of progressive or acquired hearing loss

How Does a Cochlear Implant Work?

A cochlear implant consists of an external sound processor and an internal implant.

  1. The external microphone captures sounds.
  2. The sound processor converts sounds into digital signals.
  3. The transmitter sends these signals to the internal implant.
  4. The implant converts the signals into electrical impulses.
  5. The electrode array stimulates the auditory nerve.
  6. The brain interprets these signals as sound.

Cochlear Implant Surgery

Cochlear implant surgery is performed by an experienced ENT or otologic surgeon under appropriate anesthesia. The internal device is placed beneath the skin, and the electrode array is carefully inserted into the cochlea.

The external processor is usually activated after the surgical site has had time to heal. Hearing rehabilitation and regular programming are important parts of the treatment process.

Cochlear Implant Rehabilitation

Receiving the implant is only one part of the treatment. Auditory rehabilitation, speech and language therapy, and regular device programming can play an important role in helping the brain learn to interpret the new auditory signals.

For children, early diagnosis, appropriate candidacy assessment and timely intervention can be particularly important for speech and language development.

Is a Cochlear Implant Right for You?

Cochlear implantation is not suitable for everyone. A comprehensive evaluation by an ENT specialist and audiology team may include hearing tests, speech perception assessment, imaging and other medical evaluations to determine whether a cochlear implant is appropriate.

Is loud snoring always a sign of sleep apnoea?

No. While loud snoring is a common symptom, not everyone who snores has sleep apnoea. However, persistent snoring with breathing pauses should be evaluated.

Is Obstructive Sleep Apnoea dangerous?

Yes. If left untreated, OSA can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, and daytime accidents.

Can Obstructive Sleep Apnoea be cured?

Many patients can achieve excellent control or complete resolution depending on the underlying cause, weight management, CPAP therapy, or appropriate surgery.

How is sleep apnoea diagnosed?

The most reliable test is a sleep study (Polysomnography), which records breathing, oxygen levels, heart rate, and sleep patterns overnight.

Who is at higher risk for OSA?

People who are overweight, have enlarged tonsils, nasal obstruction, a family history of OSA, or chronic snoring are at increased risk.

Is surgery necessary for every patient?

No. Surgery is recommended only when anatomical blockage contributes significantly to the condition or when non-surgical treatments are ineffective or unsuitable.
